How to Write a Perfect Statement of Purpose?

posted in: Blog | 0

Statement of Purpose (S.O.P.) is a personal statement given by a student to the university he/she is applying to. It includes information about a student’s interest fields, past volunteering experience,    goals in life and expectations from the undergraduate programme. The points to be taken care of while drafting a perfect S.O.P. are as follows:

1. Clarity Matters

Express your intentions and interest of taking up your chosen course. Also mention, why you want to pursue the undergraduate or post-graduate course in the given university. If you mention your analysis of how that course will take you closer to your goals, then you can impress the educators well. Universities look out for students who are driven to become big achievers in life, and know how their path ahead appears like. Keep challenges apart, but what matters is your conviction and intent to take up a course in a given university. Be precise and clear, that is how you rule the roost.

2. List Your Work Experience (if any)

The more you list your achievements, be it about participation in activities of winning competitions, it makes a difference. If you have had a volunteering experience somewhere while in school, then do not forget to list that as well. Academicians see how compassionate you are towards your surroundings, and more than that, it also speaks about your leadership skills, team-work and problem solving skills. So, the more you explain yourself better, the better image you create of yourself in their eyes.

3. Customize

You could follow a particular format in all the S.O.P.’s that you send to different universities. But what needs to be different is the context and relevance. It is obvious that you will talk about a different university, so you will change the name and details. But don’t forget to keep adding the interesting pointers about a particular university which are unique to only that university. So do your research of what different subject options one university is providing you, which the other ones aren’t providing. If you give out value and proper reasons, you will receive back value and good responses.

4. Proof-Read & Review

Writing is one thing, that can be done on the run of emotions after following the format. What makes the difference is proof-reading and reviewing. Ask any of your teachers to give you a review of what you are writing to the universities, and value their advise.

Give yourself time to think and express your ideas carefully. Be creative and clear to explain how much education means to you, and how studying your preferred course could change your life for good. Explain your purpose in short; to receive back the acceptance letter from the universities.
